Electric Motor Scooter

Electric Motor Scooter

If you have ever been in a traffic jam, as in, a stand-still, gridlock freeze frame of cars, you know the frustration it can cause.  If you live in a city, you have likely experienced it many times.  But sailing past that mess, weaving through it all, is another 'motorist', but one driving an electric motor scooter.

"Now that is what I need!" you may find yourself thinking, and you may be right, but make sure you do some research before driving one home, as there is much to learn about this 'alternate' transportation.

There are many styles of electric motor scooter available, and to choose the perfect one for you, it is important to be clear about your transportation needs.  How far do you intend to travel, round-trip, on a given errand or day ? Will you be traveling lightly, or need more than typical cargo space? Do you have an area or garage where you can charge your scooter for several hours each day?

The answers to these questions will help you to narrow down your choices.  For instance, most models can travel up to 20 mph, so, while this is perfect for secondary roads, it rules out any highway driving.  In addition, you can expect to operate your electric motor scooter for 8-20 miles between charges.

Charge times vary, but expect to 'refuel' your scooter for at least 4 hours, sometimes longer.  As for weight capacity, estimate your anticipated cargo, plus your own weight to arrive at your requirement. Many scooters have between a 250-400lb carrying capacity.

Lastly, what do you want to spend on this scooter?  There are registration and insurance costs associated with any vehicle requiring a driver's license, and a scooter can range anywhere from $900 to over $2,000, so plan this purchase carefully.

These days, with the ever-rising costs of gasoline and diesel fuels, and the efforts of each one of us to be more conscious of the environment, an electric motor scooter makes more sense than ever.  If your situation and needs are right, you may find yourself puttering past all of those frustrated drivers in the next traffic jam.
