Scooters For The Road Warrior - Your Guide To Touring The Road.
Maxi-scooter and Touring Scooters: A touring scooter, also known as a maxi-scooter, is a larger model, with engines ranging in power from 250 cc (Honda CN250) up to the latest 839 cc machine (the Gilera GP 800). These models also use larger frames than standard scooter types. The trend toward touring models began in the late 80’s when Honda introduced the CN250 Helix / Fusion / Spazio. Not long after, Suzuki followed suit with the Burgman 400 and the 650 designs. Honda (600 cc), Yamaha, Piaggio, Kymco (700 cc), Aprilia, and many others have also introduced models with engine displacements ranging from 400 all the way up to 850 cc. These stronger displacements make the maxi and touring designs more than capable on side streets and freeways alike. And while sufficient power exists, they also maintain an eco-friendly demeanor, getting incredible gas mileage as well. Honda's PS250 (Big Ruckus), defies typical classification because its step-through is high and it features a motorcycle-like exoskeleton instead of bodywork. The more advanced and expensive maxi-scooters differ have their engines mounted on the frame, as opposed to the swing-arm. This arrangement can improve the handling, by allowing the centre of gravity to be displaced further toward the front, and by reducing the weight bearing load on rear shock absorbers. A final drive is necessary to connect the clutch assembly to the rear wheel. The move toward larger, more powerful scooters with fully automatic transmissions is matched by an emerging trend in motorcycle design that foreshadows automatic transmission motorcycles with on-board storage. This is exemplified by the Aprilia NA 850 Mana automatic-transmission motorcycle that provides built-in storage for a full-face helmet. This trend has also, as of late, been promoted by the incresase in rising fuel costs and the greater awareness of eco-friendly traveling options. As these oversized scooters have become more popular, their prices have also dropped substancially, making these an affordable mode of transportation and a fun riding experience. Additionally, for those living in urban areas, navigating through standstill traffic and being able to park in small spaces makes it well worth while.
